Excited to see that my salad mix is starting to ge Excited to see that my salad mix is starting to germinate!!

I’m trying to create a cut and come again salad crop that will keep me sustained with leafy greens for the whole growing season.

I mixed together the contents of approximately 30-40 salad leaf seed packets of assorted varieties. I also threw in radish, chives, spring onion and beetroot seeds. I’ll consider letting some of the beetroots grow to full size but I’m more interested in the tasty leaves. I want to add some nasturtiums so I can try and achieve a trailing effect while still keeping it edible.

The container itself is filled with #peatfree compost and I’ve then added layers of organic chicken manure from bottom to top. I’ll feed with an organic seaweed and comfrey liquid fertiliser mix once every couple of weeks but the chicken manure alone should keep the crop happy and healthy for most of the season.

A photo-set from a few weeks ago when I planted my A photo-set from a few weeks ago when I planted my first set of tatties.

I’m trying something new this year. Instead of planting the seed potatoes and then gradually ‘earthing’ them up as they grow, I’m opting for the much less labour-intensive option of earthing the pots up entirely from the start.

A few of my fellow instagram gardeners have had success with this simpler method and didn’t report any differences in crop yield when trying both methods side-by-side.

Another change I made was to plant a lot less potatoes per pot (3 to be exact). In the past, I have planted 6-8 per pot and the result was lower yields and far smaller potatoes. This makes sense as they have less room for growth and less nutrition overall.

I built up the pots in layers adding broken crockery at the bottom for drainage, a thin layer of compost, the seed potatoes, another thicker layer of compost, a healthy sprinkling of organic chicken manure and then a final layer of compost on top.

I add the chicken manure at the top as it acts like a top dressing. As I water (or as it rains), the chicken poop pellets will decompose and be filtered down at roughly the same time as when most needed by the hungry potatoes. I’ll also feed regularly with liquid seaweed and add another top dressing of chicken manure when the first leaves show above the soil surface.

Last weekend I made a start on my new trio of comp Last weekend I made a start on my new trio of compost bays. With the help of a good friend, I dug holes and used postcrete to set 8 posts into the ground. Next step is to build it up and add the wire mesh to prevent the compost from falling out while still allowing for air flow.

I want the bays to last the test of time so I also plan on stapling a sheet of thick, reclaimed plastic to the inside that will protect against rot.

I’m waiting on more wood to be delivered to my supplier so I’ll post more updates when I reach that point.

I got my first set of chitted tatties potted up a I got my first set of chitted tatties potted up a few weeks ago and I had left these second earlies and main crop varieties in the box they were delivered in.

I was hoping I could keep them stored for a bit longer but the next time I checked on them, they’d sprouted long, pale chits that were caused by the seed potatoes searching for sunlight. In the future, I’ll keep all my potatoes chitting together (first earlies, second earlies, maincrops & lates) and then plant them out as required.

It was an easy mistake to fix - I simply cut or broke off the fragile and unhealthy chits, making sure that there were at least three other ‘eyes’ (growth points) on each. A couple of weeks of being sat in direct sunlight and they’re looking a LOT better already. The new chits are small and stubby which means they had access to enough bright light.

I’ll get my second earlies planted either this week or next, and then I’ll plant up my maincrop seed potatoes a couple of weeks after that, most likely in two stages so as to extend the harvest period as much as possible. I didn’t pick up any lates but I’ll keep an eye out for good deals in my local garden centres, and if not, no worries 😌

Ficaria verna, commonly known as lesser celandine Ficaria verna, commonly known as lesser celandine or pilewort, is a low-growing, hairless perennial flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae.

The flowers are pretty and provide an early source of nectar for pollinating insects, but the extensive span of their tuberous root system mean that Lesser Celandine can quickly and easily take over.

So for this bed it’s a case of right plant, wrong place and I’m carefully digging out each plant whole. No doubt I’ll miss some tubers and they’ll be back again next year, but hopefully fewer in number and far more manageable.

Liquid fertiliser from the wormery. For now I’m Liquid fertiliser from the wormery. For now I’m just emptying it on the beds while the worms get settled but I’ll begin adding it to my blue barrel when my comfrey finally gets to a harvestable state. The plan is to make my own liquid fertiliser from a combination of comfrey leaves, wormery juice and bokashi juice. I was thinking of growing my own nettles to add in with the comfrey leaves but I’m not sure just yet.

A snapshot from a recent garden overhaul project. A snapshot from a recent garden overhaul project. Pruning the acer took time as it was heavily contested with a lot of dead growth but I think it turned out pretty well. At the very least, it has great airflow now and there are no crossing branches so it’s a lot less susceptible to disease. I’m excited to see it I’m a few months time!
