Wildlife gardens are a blend of art and science. They are outdoor spaces intentionally tailored to support and attract local wildlife, and require careful planning to incorporate elements like native plants, water features, nesting sites, and food sources that cater to the needs of all creatures in the food web - from microbes and worms to hedgehogs and birds. The ultimate goal is a balance of aesthetics and ecological function.
Wildlife Garden Design
We specialise in wildlife garden design because we believe small actions can lead to meaningful change. In a time when environmental challenges are hard to ignore, creating gardens that support local wildlife offer us a practical way to make a positive impact.
Environmental issues may at times seem overwhelming, but change starts locally — in our own back gardens and green spaces. If enough of us are making small but thoughtful choices in the design and management of our gardens, our collaborative efforts bond together to create a patchwork of ecosystems, thereby creating a healthier, more sustainable environment for ourselves and future generations.

What is a wildlife garden?
A wildlife garden is a garden that emulates nature and provides a space reflective of the wild areas nearby; one where the requirements of the local ecosystem have been thoughtfully considered. Wildlife gardens play an essential role in the biological control of pests, and they also promote biodiversity, sustainability, and soil health - all for the benefit of the wider environment.
In addition to supporting wildlife, they contribute to the resilience of the environment by improving soil health, enhancing water retention, and reducing the need for chemical interventions. A well-planned wildlife garden not only enhances the aesthetic and ecological value of a property but also fosters a deeper connection to nature, promoting a sense of stewardship for the land.

STEP-BY-STEP
Initial Client Consultation
The design process begins with a site visit and an initial consultation. This allows me to understand your vision and requirements for the garden. Following on from this, I will send you a detailed brief, which includes the fee structure, an overview of the design process, and a summary of all the information I gathered, giving you an opportunity to make adjustments or add something new.
This first phase is billed as a one-off fee.
Site Survey
If you’re happy to proceed with the project, the next step is to conduct a topographical survey of the site. Depending on the size and complexity of your garden, I may carry this out myself or hire in specialist services. The survey will map the layout of the site and gather important details such as levels, utilities, and soil conditions. This thorough analysis ensures that the final garden plan is both practical and well-suited to the site.
Concept Plan
Using the information from the site survey, I will create two initial concept designs that reflect the possibilities for your garden. A mood board will also be developed to help visualise the concepts, showcasing key design themes, textures, and colours. At this stage, the focus is on the layout and overall feel of the space, rather than specific materials or plants. This allows me to explore all possibilities and ensure I am aligned with your vision before we move forward.
Presentation Plan
Once the concept plan is approved, I will develop the layout into a detailed masterplan. This includes refining spatial arrangements, such as paths, seating areas, water features, and other key elements. I will also finalise material choices for hard landscaping, like paving or walls, ensuring they suit the style and needs of the space. A planting palette will be selected to reflect the garden’s character, considering colour, texture, seasonal interest, and local climate.
Planting & Technical Plans
I will create a comprehensive set of technical drawings, including setting-out plans, level plans, cross-sections, lighting plans, and any other necessary details. A supporting document will also be provided, offering additional information for the chosen landscapers. The planting plan will outline the precise locations of all proposed plants, accompanied by a plant schedule that details each plant’s specifications, including size, variety, and quantity.
The Build
We are a design and soft-landscping business, and therefore do not offer hard landscaping services. However, I can recommend a trusted company to handle the construction of the hard landscaping elements. Once the hard landscaping is complete, we will return to install the plants and complete the soft landscaping as outlined in the planting plan. Additionally, I can provide a maintenance schedule to support the ongoing care of your garden.
